One of our Ontario Attraction Maps, Southern Georgian Bay is made up of four main townships:  Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny township and Tay township, most of which makes up the area called Huronia.

The town of Penetanguishene has the oldest recorded history dating back to an Iriquois settlement in AD 800.  The first Europeans arrived in the early 1600's, including the famous, Samuel de Champlain who is well known for his exploration across Canada.  The area later grew to become an important naval base by 1850 and was purchased by the British Government for about $800. 

The town of Midland was known as Mundy's Bay and Hartley's Landing and was settled by farming families in the mid 1800's.  It became the location of Canada's largest and most modern lumber mill of its time.

Tiny township, also settled in the mid 1800's was mainly occupied by French from Quebec who lived in present day Lafontaine and Perkinsfield.  They came for the fertile farmland and to be near the thriving commercial centre of Penetanguishene.

Tay township east of Midland is known today as the town of Port McNicoll, Victoria Harbour, Waubaushene and Waverly.  This area was originally established by the Jesuits in 1615 as a Christian mission.

Port Severn is the Oldest community on the Severn River.  It was dominated by the lumber industry which owned all of the land, houses, stores, hotel and sawmill.  It was originally called Severn Mills.

Honey Harbour is named after the wild bees and honey that the Hurons used.  A large deposit of honey was found by a public land surveyor in 1878.  Honey Harbour was also the location of the Royal Hotel that was built by Didace Grise.  This family also helped develop and operate the well-known present day Delawanna Inn.

Springwater township and Flos township are also pictured in the southern section of the map above as well as the well known Wasaga Beach area, which is the longest fresh-water beach in Canada.  The town of Wasaga Beach as well as the entire area surrounding the beach is growing with many people moving north from the city of Toronto and its surrounding areas.

Midland, Penetanguishene and Honey Harbour in the north have historically been known for great boating, fishing, golf, snowmobiling, historical sights and breathtaking scenery and now is also offering wonderful new shops, art galleries, theatres and many more activities to complement your favorites from years before.

Horseshoe Valley and the surrounding areas offer great skiing, golf, antique shops and more. Elmvale just to the west of Craighurst and Horseshoe Valley holds the famous annual Maple Syrup Festival and the Fall Fair. Elmvale also provides the northern region’s only Zoo - the Elmvale Zoo .
